(09:54)pwnz0rz: hangon im read the log

(09:55)FelisKitty: Wait a moment. If we're some kind of elite anti-supervillain unit now, we should probably review your channel's security settings.

(09:56)SonjaOfTheMoon: It's invite-only and me and Alex have ops.

(09:56)FelisKitty: You should set the logs to auto-encrypt as well. Give everyone an account-specific decryption key - it's better to be on the safe side.

(09:58)SonjaOfTheMoon: It's a good idea. I mean, it's totally redundant if any of our magic hacker buddies decide they don't like us any more, but it's still a good idea.

(09:58)metampsychotic: omg, timing

(09:58)metampsychotic: i just got a pm from one of them

(09:58)metampsychotic: "Hello! I'm one of the mysterious people outside your universe that know things we shouldn't. I hope this goes through correctly. The reason that you thought you were talking about Pancake in that conversation? That used to be the way that conversation went. I think you're hurting for information right now? Information is one of the only things I can do. Ask me anything and I I'll try to answer. If I don't know the answer I'll look for the answer. Your friends can ask questions through you too."

(09:59)pwnz0rz: jcf i reed one lof and it loinks anther log

(09:59)pwnz0rz: and befor ican even finish that one theres magilacly more log

(10:00)pwnz0rz: its like im in a bazarro knightmar abt a sundae mornring cartoon villian that hates tree

(10:00)pwnz0rz: s

(10:01)SonjaOfTheMoon: Felicity, I'll take your security suggestion under advisement once this is sorted out.

(10:01)SecundaSonja: I can handle it.

(10:02)EntropicPhantom: Sonja, was that the one that contacted you on the airplane?

(10:02)SonjaOfTheMoon: Any objections?

(10:03)SonjaOfTheMoon: There were two, and no. They were Ravencorp and Seabiscuit.

(10:03)SonjaOfTheMoon: Though I don't suppose we have any way of verifying that they're not the same person.

(10:04)pwnz0rz: oh sojnas plural gods everyone please stop [censored]ing my head

(10:05)FelisKitty: Well, I've literally just had my entire worldview upended by the revelation that magic is not only real, but computers. As meta said, "join the club".

System: Incoming private message from user SecundaSonja:

(10:05)SecundaSonja: Your security key is "Valkyrie-Project-Superman-Edition".

/message reply Got it.

(10:05)SonjaOfTheMoon: To be fair, the revelation's equally new to all of us.

(10:05)SecundaSonja: And my existence predates it by only a handful of days.

(10:06)pwnz0rz: athena this is the dumbest security code

(10:06)pwnz0rz: i cant even spell cosmology

(10:06)SecundaSonja: And now I need to assign you a new one. Please, people, don't share those.

(10:07)SonjaOfTheMoon: Four English words have considerably more entropy than conventional passwords and are easier to remember to boot. The dumbest thing is that we figured that out half a century ago and people still don't get it.

(10:07)pwnz0rz: yeah okay

(10:07)pwnz0rz: just pleaze pick word i can spell

(10:07)SecundaSonja: "Hat-Book-Sex-Cat" it is.

(10:07)pwnz0rz: that sounds illegal......

(10:08)metampsychotic: ANYWAY, could this be the aftereffects of a timeline merge?

(10:08)pwnz0rz: yeah

(10:08)pwnz0rz: panny maid me cause alot of those

(10:08)metampsychotic: could have been worse, he could have maid you a maid

(10:08)pwnz0rz: y do u keep bringing this up

(10:08)EntropicPhantom: Made you merge timelines? Why and how?

(10:09)pwnz0rz: he maid me play this weird as choose ur own avdenture game

(10:09)pwnz0rz: set in the passed

(10:09)pwnz0rz: apparently winning it required creating a bunch of timelines and merging them 2 cheat

(10:10)pwnz0rz: he called it training but icant remmember how i did it

(10:11)pwnz0rz: butt the really weird things, i was playing as

(10:11)pwnz0rz: THE GOLD ANARCHY DUDE

(10:11)pwnz0rz: what the ACTUAL, CAPITAL LETTERS AND PUNCTUATION MARKS USING [censored]

(10:12)FelisKitty: Who?

(10:13)SonjaOfTheMoon: A rather crude Hades Realm player we had the misfortune of engaging during Asphodel. Luke's met him before under dubious circumstances.

(10:13)pwnz0rz: yeah like srsly

(10:14)pwnz0rz: i cant BELEIF hes important but panny used him as teh player character in his time travel practice game

(10:15)pwnz0rz: and if hes imprortant for some reason then WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT I'D JUST HAPPEN TO RUN INTO HIM BEFORE, IN A WAY THAT WOULD MAKE SURE I'D RECOGNIZE HIM

(10:15)pwnz0rz: what the ACTUAL HECK!!!!!!!!!!!

(10:16)EntropicPhantom: How do you know it was him?

(10:16)pwnz0rz: he had a older sister called hannah and a cat called erwin

(10:16)pwnz0rz: ive kinda kept up with the real hannan and guess what, she has a kat called ewrin

(10:16)pwnz0rz: so unless pancake really likes big sisters called hannah and naming cats after obscure turn of the century webcomics

(10:17)pwnz0rz: i dunno

(10:18)SonjaOfTheMoon: Can you post the logs?

(10:18)pwnz0rz: yes but i should probably talk 2 meta about them first

(10:18)pwnz0rz: like

(10:18)pwnz0rz: theres stuffs i want her opinion on cause i dont want two lead us down a wild goose chase

(10:19)metampsychotic: i'm in the dining hall! or you can query me!!

(10:19)SonjaOfTheMoon: Wow, that's... thoughtful, Luke.

(10:19)pwnz0rz: yah well

(10:19)pwnz0rz: ...

(10:20)pwnz0rz: anyway

(10:20)pwnz0rz: it sure was nice of metas friend to post that log

(10:20)pwnz0rz: but what does it mean???

Xenocartographer (Official Note): In other news, I've made some layout tweaks! You've probably noticed the increased spacing between lines (which I'll take any feedback on, naturally). I've also reworked the authcode mechanic to be a little more interactive, which is definitely in no way topical to this page.
Arbiter: Luke's dialogue remains brilliant as always. Can't wait to see his Let's Play of Gold Anarchy Mental Illness Quest.

PS I like the new layout, but I have my worries about the new authcode entry prompt. If the actual title of the page we're trying to access is different from the text of the link (ie. "Apocalypse" vs "the end of the world"), how would we know what to enter? And is it case-sensitive?

PPS Would you recommend Erwin? I happen to be a big fan of obscure turn-of-the-century webcomics (Kid Radd for life, boi) and I'm always looking for new stuff to binge. edit delete reply
Xenocartographer: The resource name is automatically populated again. I'm sorry, I inadvertently deleted a critical close-brace and didn't notice it before it went up. There is a new feature that you'll like once you find it.

Erwin is a reference to Becky's comic, Wastelanders Anonymous. Which I'm more or less contractually obligated to recommend. Why Ben and Jeff haven't gotten together yet is beyond me. Such are the whims of a biscuit. edit delete reply
Arbiter: Oh, okay, I was planning to read that anyway. Glad to hear we don't have to enter the resource names ourselves anymore. edit delete reply
Seabiscuit: Bwahaha, the Erwin thing goes much further than that

I was talking to her about my next webcomic and how there was a cat in it I wanted to name Erwin
The VERY next day Unichat updates and it's the page with Ana and Bulwark and it's mentioned they have a cat named Erwin

The conversation that night went something like this:
"So, I saw you named their cat Erwin"
"Oh, yeah, I don't know where that came from"
"Well... "

TL;DR SHE GANKED THE NAME AND FORGOT ABOUT HER CRIMES

ALSO "Let's Play of Gold Anarchy Mental Illness Quest" I SHRIEKED IN MY CALL WITH XENO edit delete reply
Arbiter: "SHE GANKED THE NAME AND FORGOT ABOUT HER CRIMES"
The perfect crime. No witnesses, not even me.

Glad to hear that I was able to damage Xeno's hearing make somebody laugh. edit delete reply
FallenLeaves: OH MY GOD THAT CHANGE TO THE AUTHCODE MECHANICS. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH TIME THIS WILL SAVE ME.

DON'T MIND ME I'LL BE TESTING EVERY POSSIBLE GAIA CODE WE CAME UP WITH.

Then I may get around to checking things from this page with other pages.

As always, notes here.

More general notes here.

[EDIT: One hour of bashing my head against a wall later, and I've got a word. I am so excited right now.] edit delete reply
Steve the Mew hunter: You... Huh?

Did you figure something out? edit delete reply
FallenLeaves: Oh, right. Context.
I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to work out the authcode for the Gaia wikipage. Xeno has made a major change to the authcode-guessing mechanism, which makes it significantly easier, and I've finally actually managed to make some progress. Not much, but some. I'm not quite sure where to go from here, though. edit delete reply
Seabiscuit: "athena this is the dumbest security code"

Pwnz continues to be the best thing ever

And, gosh, Sonja only remembers two parts of that plane spam edit delete reply
SansTheComic: ACKSUALLY the entropy is only better if the words are chosen by a truly random process unlike how normal people would usually do it which involves thinking of the first words they think of inevitably leading to four really common words being chosen leaving them vulnerable to a dictionary attack which is really one of the first things any self-respecting hacker would use with the end result being THAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY MORE VULNERABLE THAN BEFORE

i mean

nice update and stuff edit delete reply
Xenocartographer: ASACTUATAULALLLY, you're neglecting the fact that "normal" passwords are typically generated by permutating some base word. If the hypothetical user doesn't choose their four words in a properly random way, they're going to make the same mistake choosing this single base word, so that cancels out. For them to be even, you'd need the permutations of the base word to make up for a power-of-four increase in entropy.
-
Put it another way, correct horse battery staple estimates 28 bits of entropy for a "typical" password. Let's be generous and round that up to 30, for an equivalent of randomly choosing from 2^30=1073741824 combinations. Meanwhile, if the user chooses their four words poorly enough that it's equivalent to choosing from between the top four hundred English words, we still come out ahead at 400^4 = 25600000000 words. (Incidentally, I did some back-of-the-napkin calculations making reasonable assumptions about password practices and got a figure within an order of magnitude of xkcd's. I'll share them if you're interested.)
-
As for dictionary attacks, an attacker would have to iterate their dictionary a number of times equal to the fourth power of the size of the dictionary (okay, divided by half). My back-of-the-napkin calculations suggest that a dictionary attack against an old-style password would require an equivalent of something like 500000 traversals to have good odds of actually finding something, putting the break-even point at under 100 words, at which point the dictionary attack will be woefully ineffective.
-
But that's all irrelevant, because the attacker isn't going to be specifically looking for four-word style passwords. If they're using a dictionary attack, they'll never find your password, because Hypothetical-Potato-Lick-Doorknob isn't in any dictionary I'm aware of and no permutation strategy will find it (by "permutation" here, I'm referring to strategies like replacing part of a password with 1337sp34k or tacking some symbol onto the end). Even if the attacker knows (or suspects) some passwords in the database use that style, it's not worth their time when there's probably also some bozo using p@ssw0rd.
-
If an attacker is looking for your password in particular, and they know that you're using this style of password, and you've made your choices with poor randomness, and the attacker can guess you've made your choices with poor randomness, then you're only slightly less vulnerable than if you'd chosen an "old-school" password. If the worst-case failure mode is that I'm only a little bit better off than I would be otherwise, I call that a win.
